Fun fact Friday – Barbells burn fat?!

The more muscle you have, the more energy your body uses at rest.

Adding some muscle to your body is a great way to help shed some body fat. The more muscle you have generally the faster your metabolism, and the greater amount of fat you use while resting.

Lifting weights helps build muscles where long slow cardio favours smaller muscles (huge generalisations). Being scared of lifting weights therefore might be holding you back from meeting your body image goals. It’s right to be scared of barbells though, unless you are being coached by a knowledgeable instructor they can cause issues. This is why commercial gyms use machines that control your movement, the disadvantage though is they are non functional (don’t train complete human movement patterns) and neglect smaller stabilising muscles, this means barbell training gives you more bang for your buck. In CrossFit you move under the watchful eye of knowledgable coaches to help you make the most of the time you are in the gym. We use barbells and bodyweight exercises to build muscle creating greater body performance, the added bonus is at rest your body burns more fat!Image-1
